Join California United Way leaders and advocates for Capitol Day 2024 to be held at the Residence Inn Sacramento Downtown at Capitol Park, just a few short blocks from the Capitol, from April 23-24, 2024.
The California United Way Network hosts Capitol Day to meet with elected officials to explore and advocate our policy priorities and budget proposals before the legislature. In addition to legislative meetings, participants can expect a keynote speaker, a legislative and budget panel discussing our state’s Budget deficit and implications for advocacy, training for meetings, and more!
This year we will be hosting a Live United Awards Luncheon on April 23, where we will honor two legislators who have partnered closely with the California United Way Network, present the Carol Jackson Award for Excellence in Advocacy to an advocate partner, and honor a community member who has shared their lived experience to further our collective policy goals. It will be a fantastic event, and we look forward to celebrating with you and our honorees.

The first day will focus on our panel, advocating training, awards luncheon, and keynote speaker. The second day will focus on legislative meetings from 11:15 am – 5:00 pm, with debriefs in between to go over key takeaways. Local United Way CEOs will also have the opportunity to meet with Administration officials, time TBD.
Following feedback from last year, we have decided to hold the Awards Luncheon during our first day. This will ensure maximum participation from our Local United Ways and also make it easier for Legislators to attend.
Regional Advocacy Coordinators (RACs) will help their respective Local United Ways with scheduling legislative visits. If you do not have a RAC, please reach out to Jose at jvargas@unitedwaysca.org to help plan logistics as soon as possible.
Given this year’s budget deficit which may likely impact the next few years, a key theme for this year’s panel is advocacy during difficult budget years. Our state has not faced this length of economic uncertainty since the 2007-2008 Recession and will be a defining moment for the Legislature.
No, Flex Credits may not be used given the expiration of the United Way flex credit program on December 31, 2023.

The Capitol is the historic building that is currently under construction and where we have traditionally taken our group photos. The “Swing Space” is where the Legislature conducts most of its business and where legislative meetings will be taking place.
While most folks have traditionally taken pictures around the Historic Capitol building, some United Ways have also put in requests to legislative offices to take pictures on the legislative floor (see this picture as an example). Although these types of opportunities are dependent on the legislative workload and scheduling, if you would like the opportunity to take this kind of picture for your local United Way, you may need to reach out to your legislator with the request as soon as possible.
