Volunteers help out for Day of Caring

The United Way of Ventura County held its 22nd annual Day of Caring on Saturday during which volunteers participated in service projects to help those in need and benefit nonprofit and community organizations.
"We had 800 volunteers and 24 project locations," said Marisa Lopez, community impact associate for United Way of Ventura County. "It really gives people an opportunity to Live United and come together and really make a change."

Arrowhead United Way (AUW) received a $40,000 corporate gift from Southern California Edison (SCE) to help fund critical programs in the local community. AUW and SCE are longtime partners and have a strong working relationship. Beverly Powell, the Region Manager/Public Affairs for SCE, has served on the Board of Directors of AUW for several years.

More than 3,500 Californians are about to receive a rare benefit: reduced health insurance rates.
The state announced Tuesday that it will lower premiums by as much as 24 percent for new and existing subscribers of its health program for the medically uninsurable.

Uninsured California residents who can’t get private coverage because of pre-existing health conditions are about to get a break: premiums for state-sponsored coverage financed by the federal government will be coming down by about 18 percent.
State officials said Tuesday they hope the lower rates will make the program more accessible to the people who need it, especially since so far only about 3,500 Californians have enrolled for coverage and the state has the ability to provide it to about 24,000 people.

Parents can now dial just three digits on their phone to find out how to get their children vaccinated against whooping cough in time for the start of school.
Anyone who calls 211 can find out where to get the vaccine, how much it costs and who's required to get vaccinated in order to attend school.

Feds Approve Premium Reduction for California PCIP Subscribers

The federal government has approved a reduction in premiums for subscribers to the California Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP).
Premium reductions will be reduced an average of 18 percent, ranging from 8.2 percent to 24.3 percent, depending on subscriber age and geographic region.
The new premiums take effect October 1, 2011, but subscribers who were enrolled in August or September will receive credits on future invoices or refunds, depending on whether they are still enrolled.

Dial 211 for information on whooping cough shots

A new California law for the upcoming school year requires all students entering grades 7 through 12 to have proof of an adolescent whooping cough booster shot called Tdap.
Information on whooping cough (also known as pertussis) and Tdap is available in more than 150 languages by dialing 211.

United Way of Monterey County is holding its first ever Stuff the Bus program to provide school supplies for an estimated 3,000 local children in need.
The program is similar to a drive held three years running in Santa Cruz County, where last year 1,500 students were given backpacks filled with school supplies. The students' families otherwise would not have been able to afford them.

Moreno stood in the doorway of a low-income neighborhood in Corona on Friday saying that a new program starting next week to help adults receive high school diploma equivalencies is needed in the community.
"They're not able to progress like the people who study," Moreno said in Spanish about those without an education. "It can help their children."
The Corona-Norco United Way is launching a pilot programdesigned for Spanish-speaking Latinos in Corona, Eastvale and Norco to assist them in obtaining GEDs, or General Education Development certificates.

Many low-income students likely only have those supplied by the school district.
While school districts are required by law to provide basic school supplies for students, such as pencils and paper, this does not include backpacks and some supplemental materials. To help, United Way of Tulare County is partnering with two Visalia businesses on a new backpack drive through Aug. 15 for Goshen- and Ivanhoe Elementary School.

The United Way of Santa Cruz County will host the third annual Stuff the Bus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Palace Art & Office Supply, 1501-K 41st Ave. in Capitola.
The event collects school supplies and donations for low-income and homeless children, and they are distributed by the Santa Cruz County Office of Education's Write-Start program. With more than 3,000 homeless children and 14,000 low-income children in the county, the aid is greatly needed.

Local program yields 60,492 new bank accounts

Bank on Fresno, the initiative to link "unbanked" residents with financial institutions, announced today that 60,492 local accounts have been opened in the last nine quarters of the program.
The county-wide effort is second only to the Los Angeles-area initiative, which garnered 62,085 accounts. Fresno, Los Angeles, Oakland, Scaramento, San Francisco, San Jose and Santa Ana are all participating in the program, which targets people who may have reservations about starting a banking account, such as recent immigrants.
The program, spearheaded by United Way of Fresno County and a slew of partners, also hosts community workshops offering financial literacy education. In the little less than two years the program has been around, 63 such workshops across the Valley have reached 1,011 people directly.
